Relatively few matrix proteins contributing to the shell in molluscs have been identified and most of the studies so far have focused on single proteins such as Asprich, lustrin A, per SGC-CBP30 lustrin and calconectin, whilst other proteins involved in calcium deposition include carbonic anhydrase, In a recent study, 331 randomly selected clones from a cDNA library of the juvenile mantle of tropical abalone were sequenced, The authors reported that 26% of the genes encoded secreted proteins and of the 106 unigenes identified 15 were involved in trafficking and mineral binding, mecha nisms which they suggested probably contribute to con struction of the shell.
